The map above is a thematic map from the US Census showing the median household incomes in 2006. To be more specific, this type of thematic map is called a choropleth, the most often used type of thematic mapping.

TOPOGRAPHIC MAPI got this topographic map off of a web site that was demonstrating the different types of topographic maps one might eventually come across. It is obvious topographical because it uses contour lines to portray the shape and elevation of the land being observed. PLANIMETRIC MAP
This planimetric map was created in an ongoing discussion of New York City's many map forms within cartographers over the many map base dilemma. We can tell that it is indeed a planimetric map because it is a surface map with no relief features, and it looks very similar to that of a street map. This company, HydroQual, has been trying to depict various aspects of the city and they go through a discussion of the many base maps NYC has to offer, as well as this new planimetric base map.

MENTAL MAPThis mental map is supposed to stand for the semantic network that represents Genesis chapters 1-3 basically from the beginning of the universe until Adam and Eve got thrown out of paradise, and before all the "begating" began. The technology uses natural language processing to identify words and the parts of speech (remember diagramming sentences in grade school?) and then renders a network visualization. The most "important" words are shown as a network (red=most most important, yellow=2nd, plain=3rd) and the connections represent semantic connections by the author.
The network represents the "mental map" that the average reader gets after reading the text. This was basically an advertisement for computerized text analysis software, showing an example of the mental maps most readers created in their minds after completion of reading the text.
